We welcome original work from anyone in the literary and artistic communities and accept all forms of creative writing, including poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.

Our Fall Submissions Period is now open!  We will be accepting submissions from September 3 to November 14.

This year we will be publishing a digital issue in the winter and a print issue in the spring.  All works that we receive during our Fall Submissions Period will be considered for either online or print publication, based upon the discretion of our editorial board.  For more information on the works we're currently looking for, read our interview with Jim Harrington.

  • We accept written submissions in Word (.doc or .docx) format.
  • We will review all forms of visual art, including documentation of 3-D, time-based, and site-specific work. Please send images of your artwork in JPG or TIFF formats, and specify the medium (i.e., photography, watercolor, digital, etc.).
  • We accept prose submissions up to 2500 words in length.
  • All submissions are read blind, so please remove names and any other personal information from the title and contents of the document.

Response Time
We aim to respond to all submissions within a week, and usually respond within 1-2 days.  Currently, we are listed as one of the 25 Fastest Poetry and Fiction Markets on Duotrope.  Our editorial team works hard to fully discuss and deliberate over each work while ensuring that our submitters are not left waiting for months on end without a reply.  If you have not heard from us within two weeks, you may query.

If you appreciate this writer-friendly policy, please help us by reporting our response time on Duotrope.  It only takes a moment, and it helps to honestly and accurately reflect the speed of our editorial process.

Simultaneous Submissions
We accept simultaneous submissions.  Please notify us immediately if your submission is accepted by another magazine.

Multiple Submissions
Please submit up to 5 poems, 3 short stories or nonfiction pieces, or 10 works of visual art at one time.  Multiple poems or prose pieces should be attached within a single document.  In addition, if you have received a rejection letter, please wait a week before submitting again.

We do not accept work reprinted from other magazines, but will consider submissions that have been published on a personal website or blog.

We require First North American Rights.  Following publication, all rights revert to the author, but we ask that The Penn Review is credited in subsequent reprints.  In addition, we reserve the right to edit submissions in accordance with the rules of our style guide.
